How to Use Midjourney: A Complete Guide to AI Art

Midjourney is widely considered the best AI image generator for artistic quality. It operates entirely within Discord, which can be confusing for beginners. Here is how to master it.

1. Setting Up Discord

  1. Create a Discord account if you don't have one.
  2. Join the Midjourney Discord Server.
  3. Go to a "newbies" channel to start generating, or subscribe to a plan to message the bot privately.

2. Basic Commands

  • /imagine: The magic command. Type /imagine prompt: a futuristic city to generate 4 images.
  • /blend: Upload 2-5 images and merge them together.
  • /describe: Upload an image and get 4 text prompts that describe it.

3. Understanding the Grid

Midjourney returns a 2x2 grid of images.

  • U1, U2, U3, U4: Upscale the selected image (make it larger and separate).
  • V1, V2, V3, V4: Create Variations of the selected image.
  • 🔄: Re-roll the entire grid with the same prompt.

4. Essential Parameters

Add these to the end of your prompt:

  • --ar 16:9: Sets the aspect ratio (landscape). Use 9:16 for mobile wallpapers.
  • --v 6.0: Uses the latest model version.
  • --stylize 1000: Increases artistic styling (0-1000).
  • --weird 500: Adds experimental/weird elements (0-3000).

5. Writing Better Prompts

  • Subject: A cat, a warrior, a landscape.
  • Medium: Oil painting, 3D render, photography, sketch.
  • Style: Cyberpunk, minimalist, baroque, vaporwave.
  • Lighting: Cinematic lighting, golden hour, neon lights.
